An innovative initiative is being pursued in the mixed forest of eastern Quebec. Tenant forest farming, or mktayage, has allowed 26 families to earn a living within the Bas-Saint-Laurent Model Forest since 1994. Established on private land owned by Abitibi-Consolidated tenant forest farms each average 1000 hectares. These small but viable enterprises are based on the integrated management of all forest resources by individual tenant farmers. It's a traditional formula with a modem spin and promising results are emerging after six years of operation.
